RELIVE THE 2008/09 LEAGUE CUP TRIUMPH

Ahead of this weekend's EFL Cup final against Southampton, we're taking a look back at Manchester United's previous triumphs in the competition. Next up, it's our victory over Tottenham Hotspur in 2008/09...

By the time United kicked off against Tottenham in the 2009 League Cup final at Wembley, the Reds had become quite accustomed to penalty shoot-out glory.
Just 10 months on from being crowned champions of Europe after a dramatic win over domestic rivals Chelsea in Moscow, it was a familiar story as the teams remained deadlocked at 0-0 after extra-time. Sir Alex Ferguson's side had gone close, rattling the woodwork through Cristiano Ronaldo - a scorer in that Champions League final - and via two long-range efforts from Darron Gibson and Rio Ferdinand.

In the end, though, goalkeeper Ben Foster was the hero as the Reds came through on penalties in a 4-1 shoot-out win. A record-equalling 18th Premier League title followed, capping a memorable campaign for United.
